01Claims we verify
- Trail distance, duration, difficulty and starting point.
- Road access, parking process and visitor facilities.
- Tour season, meeting location, duration, inclusions and minimum age.
- The glacier or outlet area an experience is described as using.
- Safety limitations and the boundary between maintained trails and glacier terrain.
- Commercial relationships and material booking limitations.
02Primary sources first
Park facts are checked against the authority responsible for the area. Road and weather claims are checked against Icelandic public services. Emergency and outdoor-safety statements are checked against the relevant official guidance.
Product-specific facts are checked against the operator or booking platform responsible for presenting and fulfilling the service. We distinguish those claims from independent editorial judgement.
03Cross-checking and ambiguity
When reliable sources conflict, we look for the most recent first-party information and the scope of each statement. If the conflict cannot be resolved confidently, we explain the uncertainty or omit the claim.
Names can create ambiguity in the Skaftafell area. A tour marketed as a Skaftafell glacier hike may depart from Skaftafell but operate on Falljökull or another accessible outlet. We do not automatically treat the departure label as the exact glacier visited.
We do not fill gaps with a precise figure simply because precision looks authoritative.
04Facts that change quickly
Weather, roads, trail closures, ice-cave access, tour inventory, opening hours and parking arrangements can change after a page is reviewed. We link to live sources and use conditions-change notices where a static answer would create false confidence.
Highly volatile figures should be maintained in as few places as practical so updates do not leave conflicting versions across the site.
05Checking commercial pages
A tour page is checked for the same factual quality as a hiking or attraction guide. We review whether the copy clearly separates meeting point, activity location, transfer time, activity time, group format and seasonal limitations.
We do not interpret a partner's marketing adjective as an objective fact. Claims such as best, easy, family-friendly or small-group require context that helps the reader understand the basis and limitations.
06After publication
Pages are reviewed when a scheduled update is due, an official source changes, a reader reports a problem or a material product fact changes. A visible last-checked date helps readers judge recency.
When a material error is confirmed, we correct the page and apply our corrections policy. A correction request is assessed on evidence regardless of whether it comes from a reader, public body or commercial partner.
