Hálfdán (b. 1927) is of the renowned scholar family from Kvísker farm in Öræfi. He is self-educated apart from his studies for one winter at the Laugarvatn district school. Plants and insects are his main field of interest and his insect collection is the most voluminous privately owned in Iceland. He has written many scientific papers on plants, insects and birds. The location of Kvísker farm is such that wondering birds and insects tend to come up to the Iceland coast in Öræfi. Hálfdán has a keen eye for such visitors and has written extensively on them. Hálfdán is generally praised for his knowledge and modesty.
